Rene and Lindsay Szalay

Rene and Lindsey were both born with Cerebral Palsy and each one grew up not letting any physical challenge stop them from achieving their goals.  They laugh about how they were set up and spent their first date comparing surgeries and realizing how much they had in common.  One year later, they were married. Together, they are a powerhouse of inspiration as they use their abilities to make the world a better place.  Lindsey teaches special education for her career and has been involved in equine therapy and adaptive skiing.   Rene was involved in wheelchair sports growing up, particularly tennis.   He was the number one junior wheelchair tennis player in the U.S. at sixteen.   Rene doesn’t look at wheelchairs as confinement, but a great tool to get from point A to point B quickly, without having to expend excessive amounts of energy.  He points out that not everyone in wheelchairs are paralyzed.  They can be great for making life easier and more fluid.  Rene laughs that when he walks, he looks like a drunk chicken, although he and Lindsey both walk instead of using wheelchairs in their home.  Rene believes it’s healthy to be able to laugh at yourself.  At an early age, Rene developed creative ways to improve his tennis wheelchairs and moved on to become a wheelchair technical support resource and spokesperson, traveling the country representing the innovative design and function of Ki Mobility.
